I recently updated and expanded my list of the best women's colleges in the United States. Of course Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, Smith, Scripps and Mount Holyoke are on the list. Some of the other selections may be less familiar to prospective students. To see who made the cut, check out the list of the top 12 women's colleges.

The colleges on the list were chosen based on a range of factors such as academic reputation, curricular innovations, student / faculty ratios, first-year retention rates, six-year graduation rates, selectivity, financial aid and student engagement. If there is a college that you think belongs on the list but isn't, please share your recommendation below.

4. Should Middle School Students Be Thinking About College?
Is middle school too early to be thinking about college? To a large extent, yes. Colleges will not look at grades or activities from before 9th grade. No one -- parents or students -- should be losing sleep over college during those middle school years, and parents shouldn't be placing lots of college pressures on middle school kids.

That said, a thoughtful and common sense approach to middle school can help a student achieve success once high school rolls around. Here are seven middle school tips to help a student get a strong start to high school.

    5. Junior Year College Preparation
Rising high school juniors have an important year coming up. Junior year is the last for which colleges will see a year's worth of grades, and ideally those grades will be as good as (if not better than) freshman or sophomore year. Your application will look best if your grades are trending upwards, not down.

Junior year is also a time for advanced placement courses, the PSAT, a first run at the SAT or ACT, and deeper involvement in extracurricular activities. It will be early in senior year when you apply to college, so you can't put off strengthening your credentials until your final year of high school.

These 10 tips for junior year college preparation can help keep you on track as you gear up for college applications.
